Seabrook TX

From Corpus Christi to New Orleans, we stopped in Seabrook, TX to break up the 7.5 hour travel time. Our max that we want to drive each day is about 5 hours per day.  And we found out that by staying at Choice Hotels, we can earn free nights in hotels and earn extra reward points like savings per gallon at a Shell gas station.  So it can be a win-win either way.

Stopping here at Seabrook, TX, I got to see a friend, Amy Crowder-Simon, from high school that I haven’t seen in like 20 years. It was really great talking with her, catching up, and just talking about what’s going on. It was an enjoyable time and loved seeing her.

The next morning we went to the Houston Space Center, which was just a few miles from where we were staying.  It’s so amazing what our astronauts do and what they are planning on doing in the future.

We also got to try gater bites and crawfish while we were here.  Before leaving we also got to try T-Bones BBQ.  Great BBQ brisket and greens beans.

This town was clean and cute.  Would come back for sure.

Corpus Christi

After a great time at San Antonio, we headed to Corpus Christi, which is 7 hours from where we were.   Just outside of San Antonio, we stopped at the locally owned BBQ joint called McBee’s BBQ. The flavors were great, the sandwich we had was tender and good. The ribs were a little on the tough side, but still tasty.

We finally arrived, it was about 6pm. We were surprised to see all of the oil manufacturers that were in the area when we came upon the city. They were everywhere. But after passing them, you saw the ocean. Which due to the gulf stream, the ocean is very merky.

Our first night there, we just rested. I caught up on one of the blogs. (trying to do better and keep it more current)  So, I found the closest Little Caesar’s pizza to try their Smokehouse pizza, and we just hung out that night at the hotel.  The next morning we got up and started down the ride to Padre Island.

The first stop we made was a local coffee shop and everyone there was friendly.

We next went to the Texas Sea Life Center where they help animals that have been injured and if possible will release them back once they have healed.  The falcon though will be an ambassador to educate people because his wing never healed correctly.   And the boa constrictor is not legal to have so it will not be released in the wild.

The Falcon Ambassador and yes that is a boa constrictor in the back tank.

This island is interesting as it is a turtle preservation area and all ocean currents direct everything right to this island. Tons and tons of trash from all over the world end up here.  One of the rangers told us that one day, they had 800 volunteers and they picked up 50 Tons of trash! She told us some days there is nothing and other days there is a lot. Even cars, dishwashers, and boats will wash up. At this center, they hand out free trash bags to anyone that wants one. And I can see why. Although when we were there, it was pretty clean.

We now traveled back to the hotel, so we could walk around the North beach.

We walked along the beach. And headed to the USS Lexington.

This ship was commissioned in 1943-1945 and was an aircraft carrier. It always amazes me how intelligent the armed forces are.

Now onto

San Antonio

After finally making it to San Antonio, we stayed about a 1 mile from the downtown riverwalk.   The hotel was nice but it was in a run down area, although overall an okay neighborhood.  We felt safe walking in the area.

After making it to the riverwalk, we stopped off to have a drink and appetizer, however the service was not good, so we left within 15 min of arriving.  The ducks were hanging out close by on the river.

We continued down the path and came across a place that we decided to try.  The staff was nice and we ended up trying a pretzel loaf.  We had never had one and thought why not.  A pretzel loaf is basically a small individual sized pretzel baguette, cut open and included salami and cheese.  We folded it like a sandwich and dipped it in their mustard and cheese that came on the side. It was good.  Will have to keep it in mind for when we get home.

Next we continued to walk around and meet some great people.  It was also neat to be able to sit along the river, seeing the boats coming through the river and just relaxing enjoying the night.

After the riverwalk we came up to the street level, and came across a piano bar which was cool watching the two piano players battle it out on the pianos.

After seeing the piano players, we walked over to do a carriage ride downtown, with Sam (the horse) and Isis (pronounced e-sis).  Our lady driver was great!

After a long day, we went back to the room for some rest.

New Mexico

It’s been a couple days since I have last blogged. Sorry about that. When we left AZ, and stayed in Deming, NM.  Cute town that came about due to the wars.  By this day, both AZ and NM were amazingly warm for a March day.

The next morning we set off to the City of Rocks state park. A place where rocks were formed from volanic rocks, water, and wind.

There were some cool rocks and beautiful scenery. But truth be told, it seemed cooler when I looked it up but when we got there it was just okay.

Before leaving the City of Rocks, Michael got to give a new some water. Which was cool to see. (uploaded in videos).

After leaving the rocks, we drove through the Gila National Forest. Beautiful forest filled with trees, mountains, rivers, streams, etc.

It was a long drive through the national forest (2 hours) but amazing views and worth driving through.

About 3/4 of the way through we stopped off at Hillsboro to grab a bite to to eat. It was a cute small town that started because of mining. We ate at the Hillsboro cafe, an eclectic mix of of burgers and Mexican food that draws locals to come eat there often.

After getting full, we traveled into Las Crucas. We tried a local brewery as it was a long day.  The people there were nice and friendly. The place reminded us of the Pozo Saloon out in Santa Margarita, as they have concerts and can have up to 1400 people in the area.

Now we headed to an area close by that has a recycled Roadrunner that is huge. It was awesome to see thrown away items became art.

After a long day, we headed to El Paso, TX.  Due to how dirty the town felt, we only had a Boom Boom Shrimp appetizer at Bricktown and headed out. The appetizer was great though! And the people working here are wonderful!

We left full and got on the road. We stopped in Fort Hancock, and got some shut eye on our bed in the vehicle…

Tucson, AZ

After a good night’s rest, we headed 50 min north of Tucson to the Biosphere 2 near Oracle, CA.  The temperature was already warming up for this March morning (75 degrees at 11am).   If you haven’t heard of the Biosphere 2, it is a research facility to figure out if we could grow plants on Mars and if Earth never had water again, how would plants survive.  They have mimicked the various “atmosphere’s” of the USA.  They have a rainforest, ocean, desert, etc all for the name of science.

Upon arriving, we walked to where the tour was starting.  This is a place where a private investor paid over 100 million to do this research, to learn about our plants.  Then the University of AZ took over.  Now students are scientists and do the research, which I believe is great!

For the tour, we started in the orchard room, then off to the ocean and rainforest room.

It amazing walking into the rainforest room as you immediately felt the humidity.

After seeing how they are researching the ocean and rainforest, we moved on to the desert room.

Next we got to see how everything works underneath and all the maintenance that takes place.  It is amazing everything that goes into what they do.  After seeing all the mechanical workings, we walked into a tunnel that took us to the “lungs” of the building.  This building was specifically made up to handle the pressures of an enclosed building.  The building actually breathes and the dome goes up or down depending on the pressure of the building so it will neither explode or implode.  The design is amazing!

Overall, the tour is one to definitely do if you haven’t been here!

After the tour, we headed to the South Lawn Cemetary where my Grandfather and Great Grandmother & Great Step-Grandfather are buried.   It was neat to see family history and learn a little bit more when I called my parents to ask some questions.

It’s been a great day here in Tucson but it’s time to see something else.  So we start heading east to our next destination whatever that may be.  While traveling east, we came upon a winery and decided to check out Arizona wine.  We’ve had other Arizona wine and wasn’t impressed but this winery changed our minds.  They were a little lighter than California wine but they remained smooth and full of flavor.  And the service here was great!  Thank you Coronado Vineyards for finishing off our AZ stay great!

Now off to New Mexico….

Coming into Arizona

Today we headed to Tucson, AZ which was a 6 hour drive.  We saw the wall between the USA and Mexico, a lot of border patrol, beautiful mountains, and plenty of cacti.

US / Mexican Border

We stopped off to a couple of places but didn’t get into Tucson until 5:30, as we forgot we would lose an hour due to the time zone change.  Although we really didn’t do much today, we will be rested up and ready for a full day tomorrow.  We heard about the Biosphere 2 and it’s only 51 minutes from where we are.  Plus I will be able to see my grandfather’s grave since he is buried here in Tucson.

The Beginning…

As the days grew closer to us leaving and starting out journey, we got more excited. We put plywood down on the back of the expedition so we won’t feel the grooves from taking out the back seat. Then on top of that foam to make it more comfortable. Next, just standard bedding. So now, we just had to pack and we would be ready.

Our first stop was Solvang as had a free night to stay at the Chumash. So why not start our vacation off right. Before making it to the hotel, we stopped at Figueroa Mtn Brewery to try one of their beers. While sitting there, the vacation started setting in and we prayed thanking God of blessing us with this trip.

Before leaving Solvang, we stopped to have an Abeleskiver, which is a Danish pancake topped with raspberry jam and sprinkled with powered sugar.

The next day we headed to San Diego.  This was my first trip there and we truly enjoyed ourselves. We visited Balboa Park. The beauty and serenity was breathtaking and offered a little something for everyone.

Then we came back closer to our hotel, finally found parking and started walking to the waterfront park to walk around by the ocean. It was beautiful. We ended up having an appetizer and drink overlooking the ocean.

Crab Bruschetta

After walking around by the ocean, we headed toward the ever popular GasLamp District. On the way, we met Alex aka “Popi Express” who gave us a ride in his pedicab. If you haven’t taken a pedicab, you should as it’s a lot of fun.

Front of the GasLamp District

Walking through the GasLamp District was both entertaining and fun. There were all kinds of walks of life, which made the walk back to our hotel very interesting meeting new people. One stop, we met a waitress that was from MN and came out here with her roommate to get away from the cold.  She was for sure Mid-West friendly and a great lady.

But before going back, we stumbled upon a Mediterranean restaurant that satisfied our hunger but still felt like a light meal.

All in all, we loved San Diego and will probably come back to see more of this great city.

Now, we are headed to Tucson, AZ…

The Journey Ahead of The UnCaged Traveler

Welcome to The Uncaged Traveler Blog.  Why Uncaged Traveler?  Because there are no restrictions on where we go.  We follow the wind and where our hearts take us.  We are free and uncaged from the routines of our own lives.  Living day by day. Taking in the sunshine and accepting God’s grace of keeping us safe.   We thank Him who is allowing us the ability to take the opportunity of seeing this great country we live in.

The only plan we will follow is taking the southern coastline on this trip, up the east coast then cutting across the middle of the United States.  But time is on our side.  We can travel at our pace. Go where we want to go.  No rules.  No real plans of what we will be seeing along the way.  Just two people seeing America for how great of a country she is.  Traveling to see her past and present.  The history that made America.  The diversity of people of who makes up America.

We feel blessed to be able to do this and will be sharing our journey along the way.  Good or bad.   Future goals are to not only see the United States but eventually seeing abroad as well.  For now, the southern United States are calling us.  From coast to coast.  Tasting the foods and flavors that make that state.  Making new friends and reacquainting with old friends.

Enjoying the Good Life one day at a time. Here’s to the Land of The Free.  See you soon America…
